Who runs this, and why
I'm Wayne. I built and run niu-lai.net by myself — it's not affiliated with the filmmakers, distributors, or any studio behind Niu Lai. No editorial team, no newsroom, just one person checking claims against Chinese-language sourcing that most English coverage never read.
Why this site exists
English-language coverage of Niu Lai was almost entirely built on other English-language coverage — the same handful of numbers (the "$200 budget," "most profitable film ever") kept getting repeated without anyone going back to check them against the original Chinese reporting. I went and read that reporting, and the numbers didn't hold up. That fact-check is here, and the reasoning behind why the story spread so differently in China and the West is here.
How I check things
Every factual claim on this site is supposed to link to the actual source it came from, not just name-drop an outlet. The box office numbers on this page are pulled directly from Maoyan Pro's ticketing dashboard several times a day, not copied from whatever number a news article happened to quote on the day it was published. When I get something wrong or a number moves, I fix it — if you spot an error or have a better source, tell me, see below.
What this site is not
It's not an official source for the film, its box office, or its production company. It's not affiliated with any streaming platform, ticketing platform, or news outlet quoted here. And to say it plainly, since the question comes up: the unrelated cryptocurrency also using the name "Niu Lai" has nothing to do with this site, the film, or its creators — I don't cover it, promote it, or benefit from it in any way.
